Corporate & Community Partnerships

MTWAC works with government, industry, research organisations, community partners and individuals across environmental management, cultural heritage, youth development, language revitalisation and research.

NRE Tasmania

MTWAC works collaboratively with NRE Tasmania on a range of environmental management activities across Crown land and reserves in the Cape Portland region. This partnership focuses on the identification and eradication of invasive weeds and feral animal species to improve ecosystem health and protect biodiversity.

MTWAC Rangers also undertake beach patrols which include the removal of rubbish and marine debris, helping to protect significant coastal environments. In recent years, Rangers have assisted with monitoring regional beaches for suspected cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5 bird flu) and reporting relevant observations to support biosecurity responses.

Tasmanian State Government

MTWAC works collaboratively with the Tasmanian State Government to support Aboriginal cultural heritage, language revitalisation, youth development and community engagement initiatives across North and Northeast Tasmania.

A key area of collaboration is MTWAC's participation in Tasmania's dual naming processes, which support the recognition and preservation of Tasmanian Aboriginal language, cultural heritage and traditional place names. MTWAC undertakes research into traditional place names and culturally significant landmarks, including rivers, mountains, coastal features and other geographical locations across Country. This work involves cultural research, community consultation, language revitalisation and engagement with Aboriginal knowledge holders.

MTWAC also consults with a broad range of stakeholders, including landowners, local councils, businesses, industry groups, recreational users, fishers and government agencies to ensure dual naming proposals are respectful, evidence-based and aligned with the principles of the Tasmanian Dual Naming Policy. Through the preparation and submission of dual naming proposals, MTWAC contributes to the recognition of Aboriginal cultural heritage and strengthens community understanding of the continuing connection of Tasmanian Aboriginal people to Country.

In addition, MTWAC works alongside the Tasmanian State Government through programs such as the Menuganna Junior Ranger Program and the Parmroopelltey Marbelay Youth Hub, creating opportunities for young Aboriginal people to engage with culture, leadership, education and on-Country learning. These initiatives support skills development, cultural identity, community participation and pathways into employment, training and environmental land management careers.

Through these partnerships, MTWAC continues to promote cultural knowledge, strengthen community connections and create positive outcomes for future generations while supporting the ongoing recognition of Aboriginal people, culture and Country throughout Tasmania.

Hydro Tasmania

MTWAC holds a licensing agreement associated with approximately 200 acres of land at Cape Portland within the Woolnorth Wind Farm precinct. This agreement provides opportunities for MTWAC to undertake land management activities that support environmental stewardship, cultural values and long-term conservation outcomes.

The partnership supports the continued management and care of Country while creating opportunities for Ranger-led environmental programs and cultural land management practices.

ACEN Australia

MTWAC has entered into a sponsorship agreement with ACEN Australia to support the work of the Tebrakunna Ranger Program across Northeast Tasmania.

This support assists MTWAC to purchase equipment, resources and materials required to undertake environmental and land management projects. Funding also supports research activities, field operations and the continued development of Ranger capabilities, enabling the delivery of practical conservation and regeneration outcomes across Country.

Woolnorth Wind Farm

MTWAC works in partnership with Woolnorth Renewables to support land management activities on the Woolnorth Wind Farm property at Cape Portland.

Partnership activities include:

• Feral animal monitoring and control
• Weed identification and management
• Firebreak assessment and management
• Aboriginal heritage assessment and protection
• Environmental monitoring and land stewardship

This collaboration assists in balancing environmental, cultural and operational requirements while ensuring Aboriginal heritage values are recognised and protected.

Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium

MTWAC has established a Memorandum of Understanding with Rio Tinto Bell Bay Aluminium to support environmental management activities on and around Rio Tinto-managed land in the George Town region.

The partnership includes:

• Weed identification and assessment
• Weed management and control programs
• Regeneration and habitat restoration activities
• Environmental monitoring and land management advice

MTWAC's Tebrakunna Rangers and Menuggana Junior Rangers contribute to partnership projects, delivering practical outcomes on Country. Some services are provided on a fee-for-service basis, creating employment and development opportunities while improving environmental outcomes.

Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) and University of Tasmania (UTAS)

MTWAC maintains an active partnership with IMAS and the University of Tasmania, contributing to environmental monitoring, scientific research and biodiversity conservation initiatives.

Collaborative activities include:

• Water temperature monitoring and environmental data collection
• Monitoring of giant kelp habitats
• Future seagrass monitoring programs
• Acoustic monitoring of native button grass ecosystems to identify threatened, endangered and rare animal species
• Wombat mange treatment programs
• Fish tagging and flathead population monitoring
• Research into King George whiting and flounder growth, reproduction and population dynamics

These projects combine contemporary scientific research with local environmental knowledge to support informed management and conservation outcomes.

NRM North

MTWAC works closely with NRM North on research, environmental monitoring and landscape restoration projects across Northeast Tasmania.

Key partnership activities include:

• Research into patch cultural burning practices
• Investigation of traditional native grass management techniques
• Native seed distribution and regeneration methods
• Water quality monitoring
• Freshwater ecosystem assessments
• Research and monitoring of threatened freshwater lobster populations

This collaboration supports the integration of Aboriginal knowledge and contemporary conservation approaches to improve ecological outcomes and strengthen the health of Country.

MTWAC has established a partnership with Tasmanian Walking Company, creating opportunities to work together in ways that recognise and strengthen Aboriginal culture, connection to Country and community.
