Language Revitalisation
Karnalirya Lientiack: Conversations Awaken
The MTWAC Language Revitalisation Project - Karnalirya Lientiack: Conversations Awaken is a community-led initiative currently in development, focused on bringing the traditional language of the Coastal Plains Nation as spoken on Tebrakunna Country (Cape Portland, northeast Tasmania) at the point of colonisation, back into everyday use.
Building on decades of cultural and linguistic work led by MTWAC Elder Aunty Patsy Cameron, and supported by Director Zac Cameron, the project will reconstruct, document and reactivate the language for use in everyday community life, on Country programs and in local schools through MTWAC’s youth leadership and cultural education initiatives. Governance is grounded in MTWAC’s established cultural authority structures, ensuring community control and cultural integrity throughout.
By restoring language, this work aims to strengthen identity, reconnect culture and ensure knowledge is carried forward for future generations.
