The Next Generation of Aboriginal Custodians

The Tebrakunna Rangers are caring for Country while nurturing the next generation of Aboriginal leaders.

Based on Tebrakunna Country at Cape Portland, the Ranger Program combines Aboriginal knowledge with contemporary conservation to care for land, sea and sky Country as a connected whole. Rangers work alongside Elders to protect cultural heritage, restore ecosystems, monitor wildlife and strengthen the health and resilience of Country through practical, on-ground action.

Since launching in 2023, the program has grown rapidly. Nineteen Aboriginal people have completed MTWAC's culturally tailored Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management, creating a pathway from training into meaningful employment caring for Country. Today, the Ranger team includes five Aboriginal Rangers, with funding supporting further expansion and creating new opportunities for Aboriginal people to build careers on Country.

The program is about much more than environmental management. It is building skills, confidence and cultural connection, creating a pipeline of future Aboriginal leaders and inspiring the next generation through initiatives such as the Junior Rangers Program.
